Endometriosis and Abdominal Massage: A Gentle Approach to Support and Comfort
Living with endometriosis can affect more than your menstrual cycle. Pain, fatigue, and discomfort can interrupt work, relationships, rest, and the everyday activities you love. You deserve care that listens to your experience and respects your body.
At Phoenix Women’s Health Massage, abdominal massage and Mayan abdominal massage offer a space for gentle, individualized bodywork. These approaches may support relaxation and comfort alongside medical care, with each session guided by your needs and tolerance for touch.
Understanding Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing inflammation and sometimes scar tissue. Symptoms can include painful periods, ongoing pelvic pain, bloating, fatigue, and pain with bowel movements, urination, or intercourse. Some women also experience difficulty becoming pregnant. Symptoms and their severity vary from person to person.
Endometriosis requires medical assessment and an individualized treatment plan. Massage can be considered as complementary support, but it does not replace evaluation or treatment from an endometriosis specialist.
How Abdominal Massage May Support Comfort
When your abdomen feels tender or painful, touch needs to be approached thoughtfully. Abdominal massage should be gentle, comfortable, and adapted to how you feel that day.
Possible supportive benefits include:
Relaxation: A quiet setting and gentle touch can create an opportunity to rest.
Attention to muscle tension: Bodywork can address surrounding areas, such as the lower back and hips, when those muscles feel tight or tired.
Greater body awareness: A slow session gives you space to notice where touch feels comforting and where your body needs less pressure or no contact.
A sense of choice and control: You decide which areas are included, how much pressure is used, and when to pause.
What Makes Mayan Abdominal Massage Different?
In my practice, Mayan abdominal massage, also called Sobada, brings focused abdominal work together with attention to the back, sacrum, and the rest of the body. My approach is informed by my abdominal massage education and continued learning with traditional teachers in Guatemala.
A session may include slow external abdominal touch, supportive bodywork, and gentle breath awareness. The intention is to offer a nurturing experience where you can reconnect with your body at your own pace.
For someone living with endometriosis, this may mean beginning with the back or shoulders and leaving the abdomen untouched. On another day, light abdominal work may feel welcome. Receiving care does not require tolerating painful pressure.
Mayan abdominal massage has not been established as an effective treatment for endometriosis. It should not be presented as a way to remove lesions, break apart internal adhesions, reposition reproductive organs, balance hormones, or restore fertility. Its role here is supportive care focused on comfort, relaxation, and your experience of touch.
Care That Respects Your Body
Persistent pain can make it difficult to feel comfortable in your body. A caring massage session offers time to be heard and to communicate what you need.
At Phoenix Women’s Health Massage, we discuss your symptoms, medical history, recent procedures, and preferences before beginning. Pressure and positioning can be adjusted throughout the session, and abdominal work is always optional.
Relaxation does not mean your pain is caused by stress. Endometriosis is a physical medical condition, and you deserve both appropriate treatment and compassionate support.
When Abdominal Work Should Wait
During a painful flare, direct abdominal touch may feel uncomfortable and should be avoided if it increases symptoms. Recent abdominal or pelvic surgery, pregnancy, or active medical treatment may require guidance from your healthcare clinician before abdominal massage. Massage safety depends on your health circumstances and the techniques used. (nccih.nih.gov)
New or suddenly worsening abdominal pain, fever, fainting, or unusually heavy bleeding calls for medical attention rather than a massage appointment.
